Best way to earn gold in Red Dead Online

Red Dead Online has been out for a few years now and during that time, Rockstar Games have often adjusted pay. From Stranger Missions to Daily Challenges there, here we answer a question lots of players ask, what are the best ways to earn Gold fast in Red Dead Online?

Gold is a premium currency in Red Dead Online and one of four available currencies, the others being Capitale, Cash and Role Tokens. Players can buy gold directly from the Rockstar store, however, buying gold isn’t necessary, as players can earn gold from a variety of in-game activities.

Here we’ll cover every possible way to earn Gold Bars in Red Dead Online along with what method is best.

Awards – An Easy Way to Earn Gold Just by Playing

Often overlooked, yet a great way to earn extra Gold just by playing Red Dead Online is Awards. You can earn awards by getting kills with a specific weapon or hunting certain animals. The full list of awards can be found via the Start Menu by going to Progress, then Awards.

You’ll also receive a Gold Belt Buckle the first time you complete an award which can be equipped via wardrobes.

After completing an award, you will unlock the option to “reset” the award. Resetting awards will earn you 0.4 Gold Bars and allow you to complete the award once again. You can complete most awards up to 10 times and there are over 400 awards available.

Bonus: If you have the Prestigious Bounty Hunter License, you can earn 0.5 Gold Bars and $100 by earning XP. To get this award, head to the awards screen after earning 10,000 Bounty Hunter XP and reset the Bounty Award. There is also no limit to how many times you can reset this award.

Bounty Hunting – The Best Method to Earn Gold Fast in Red Dead Online

Becoming a Bounty Hunter is one of the most straightforward ways to earn gold and the best overall. You’ll receive a small amount of gold for every bounty target you apprehend, dead or alive. To start as a Bounty Hunter, you’ll need the Bounty License which can be purchased from any bounty board.

There are three difficulty tiers of regular bounty, indicated by a $ on the Bounty Poster. Each difficulty tier has its own Cash & XP multiplier, with you earning more for harder bounties. However, this has no impact on the amount of Gold Bars you earn and it doesn’t matter what bounty mission you choose.

Similarly to Stranger Missions & Opportunities, you’ll earn more Gold Bars for taking longer to turn in the target. If you turn in a bounty in 3 minutes, you’ll earn 0.08 Gold Bars in total, however, you can earn an additional 0.08 Gold Bars for every additional 3 minutes it takes you to complete a bounty mission.

The sweet spot is turning in a bounty after 12 minutes, which will earn you 0.32 Gold Bars. Taking any longer than this will mean the time invested is worth less than the Gold Bars earned. You can see a full breakdown of the pay per minute in this guide.

Daily Challenges – An Easy Way to Earn Some Gold

Daily Challenges were at one point the best way to earn gold in Red Dead Online by far, however they did receive a substantial nerf back in 2020. Even so, for new players, daily challenges are an easily accessible way to earn up to two Gold Bars per day.

How much gold can you earn from Daily Challenges?

Players can earn from 1 Gold Bar, up to 5.5 Gold Bars per day from Daily Challenges, which over a week is between 7-38.5 Gold Bars.

We have created an extensive Daily Challenge Guide that covers everything you need to know, from how much you earn per challenge, to how challenge streaks work.

Free Roam Missions & Opportunities

Back during the Red Dead Online beta, Free Roam missions were one of the only ways you could earn gold. Today, they’re largely forgotten about by most players who prefer the specialist roles.

Similarly to Bounty Missions, you’ll earn a little more cash & gold for taking longer to complete the mission. The general rule of thumb is leaving most missions until there are around 3 minutes left on the timer. Doing so usually nets you around 0.2-0.4 Gold Bars. Members of the Red Dead Online subreddit crafted a full pay chart showing the optimal completion time for each mission.

Online Game Modes – Earn Gold Whilst Having Fun

Red Dead Online features quite a few different PVP game modes, from archery to more classic shootouts. The reward for all game modes is a small amount of cash and gold. By themselves, they won’t earn you much in the way of Gold Bars, however, Rockstar often has bonuses on specific game modes so you can earn a bit more than usual. You can keep up to date with the latest Red Dead Online bonuses via Social Club.

Note: When you complete the story missions for the first time you’ll also receive a one-time cash & gold bar bonus.

Treasure Maps – A Great Way to Earn Gold Fast in Red Dead Online

Hunting for treasure is another great way to earn Gold Bars, you just need to find a Treasure Map. There are a few ways to find Treasure Maps in Red Dead Online, the most common being from looting corpses. You can also find maps in chests, take them from treasure hunters or even find them on trees.

Treasure Boxes will usually contain between 1-2 Gold Bars and between $50-$200, however it does vary wildly.

If you already have Treasure Maps, we have a comprehensive guide covering every possible treasure location.
