Next-gen console details for Red Dead Online

News - Red Dead Redemption · · by Magnar

The next generation of console gaming will be with us next week, and with it, many players are hoping to take advantage of the more powerful consoles for Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online

Backwards Compatibility

Rockstar recently confirmed that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S via backwards compatibility, meaning if you own a disc version of the game you only need to pop it in to play, or if you own a digital version you’ll be able to instantly download the game to your new console.

The original Red Dead Redemption will also be compatible with the Xbox Series X|S consoles.

Game Progress

Players will have the ability to transfer single player save files using LAN cables, wifi or USB storage. Additionally cloud saves can also be transferred if enabled.

For Red Dead Online (and GTA Online), progress will automatically carry over so long as players use the same PSN & Xbox Live accounts. Rockstar have provided a settings page to check that your console & Rockstar accounts are properly linked.

Can I play on next-gen with players on current-gen consoles?

Yes! Our friend BeetleComet recently confirmed this during his test & review of the Xbox Series X over at Full Throttle Media.

I’ve received numerous questions regarding lobbies and cross-gen play in both #GTAOnline and #RedDeadOnline. I can confirm that sessions group both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players together. The games do not identify who is on which system, it’s just a seamless integration.

More good news for players on both consoles is that you can also join parties with friends on current & previous gen consoles at the same time.

Can I transfer an XB1 save to PS5 or PS5 to XSX?

At the moment, it looks unlikely, cross-gen support hasn’t been an option during the life cycle of RDR2. During the PC launch, console players couldn’t transfer to PC either.

RDR2 & Red Dead Online next-gen load times.

Additionally, BeetleComet has also tested the load times for Red Dead Online & RDR2, along with GTA, you can see the impressive results below!

The load times are a massive improvement over current gen consoles, which in some cases can take several minutes to load into Single Player & Online.
